The nationals which made history
Richard Eaton

There was history and histrionics, and more besides. World champions Nathan Robertson and Gail Emms lost their national title and Robertson gained a yellow crowd for stamping on the shuttle - but the 23-21, 14-21, 22-20 defeat to Anthony Clark and Donna Kellogg still enhanced the reputations of England's most famous badminton players.

That was because the level of the best rallies made it one of the most memorable matches in the tournament's 44 years. And the defeat created brought to light just how outstanding the favourites have been during the six years since they paired up for a second time.

It was Robertson's and Emms' first loss to domestic opposition in all that time - a sequence involving something  like 60 matches - and it happened on the first occasion a world final has ever been repeated in an English national final.

The Finals ... quick summary and Quotes
It's Clark and Kellog at last,
Kidd and Cann again ...

Quick summary from Steve Cubbins

Gaining revenge for their defeat in last year's World Championship final, Anthony Clark and Donna Kellogg finally beat their friends and rivals in a thrilling match to become National Champions for 2007.

The defending champions thought they'd won the first, but an over-rule on a line call made it 20-all, and Clark & Kellogg went on to take the lead, then held their nerve in the third, taking the title on their fourth match point having squandered a 20-17 lead.

Richard Eaton: the Nationals that made history

The second match of the day saw the unseeded Elizabeth Cann regain the title she won in 2005, recovering from 13-8 down in the first and 2-5 in the second to beat top seed Jill Pittard.

Then it was Nick Kidd's turn to win a second title as he defended the championship with a straight-sets win over Nathan Rice.

Donna Kellogg collected her second trophy of the day when she and Gail Emms retained their women's doubles title, a feat emulated by Anthony Clark as he and Robert Blair retained their men's doubles title.

"I'm over the moon once again!

"I know Nathan has good defence and that if I attacked too soon he'd get it back and extend the rallies, so I had to pick my time to attack, which I thought I did quite well.

"Considering that on Thursday I was thinking of pulling out of the tournament it's not bad - the physios patched me up and kept me going, but if the tournament had been one day longer my bandage would have been up to my thigh!

"No, it actually felt a bit looser today, maybe it was the adrenalin pumping through me. My coach Sarah told me that it's the last day, the last match of the tournament, so go out there and give it all, don't go on thinking 'oh, I'm injured' ...

"Last year I was angry at missing out on the Commonwealth Games, this year I wanted to make a case for the funding I lost a few weeks ago."

"I've beaten some good players this week and I'm National Champion again, so that must count for something, it should make a pretty good case."

Elizabeth Cann bt [1] Jill Pittard  21/19, 21/17 (33m)

"I got off to a rocky start. She changed the way she normally plays, she hit down a lot more than usual so that threw my game plan out of the window for a while.

"Then I started getting into my groove and it was a matter of rebuilding my concentration.

"I'm very pleased, I went out in the semis last year so really wanted to make amends for that, and even though I wasn't seeded it didn't affect me at all, you still have to play and beat the top players to win it."

[1] Blair & Clark bt [2] Langridge & Lindley
           21/16, 21/15 (32m)

"We've been playing some fantastic badminton together since we teamed up 18 months ago, we're really starting to gel now.

"The lads did well, but they were maybe a bit nervous, they went for a few shots too early trying for winners. That can happen to you sometimes when you get to a final, the event can get to you.

"It's the first time I've won two titles at one event, and it's my sixth men's doubles title on the trot which is very pleasing, obviously.

[2] Clark & Kellog bt [1] Robertson & Emms    23/21, 14/21, 22/20 (65m)

"We'd never beaten them before, you just have to fight against them, don't you.

"We know when we play them that we need slower shuttles, they're so good when it's fast. It's slower in here, so it allows us to play our game more.

"We've been struggling with our movement for a few weeks, but today our movement was great.

"This is a great boost for the All-England, and it's good that we've got two pairs right up there in the world standings, and some good youngsters coming through who can take over from us when we finish."

[1] Emms & Kellogg bt
[2] Munt & Nicholas  21/17, 21/17 (34m)

"We play each other a lot in training, so it's hard when we have to play against each other in tournaments, we know each others' games so well.

"After three sets in the mixed we were both absolutely knackered, but we managed to play well enough to win.

"It's taken a few years for me to win two trophies in one tournament, it's a nice feeling."
